Last week, the Federal Police seized three Maltese puppies in a vehicle from Romania and a Pomeranian puppy in a vehicle from Bulgaria at the Walserberg border crossing.
After the dog children were only six or ten weeks old and had not been vaccinated and the responsible animal shelter in Freilassing was full, they were admitted to the rabies quarantine of the Garmisch animal shelter by the Berchtesgadener Land veterinary office.
The police are investigating the drivers.
The Maltese puppies Bruno, Bella and Fibi and the pomeranian Georgi will now remain in quarantine for a few weeks until the treatment against the intestinal parasites is completed and they have the necessary vaccinations.
It is not yet clear whether they can stay in the shelter for adoption or whether they will have to be handed over to their owners.
Tessy Lödermann, Chairwoman of the Animal Welfare Association: “The puppy trade is booming and is huge business for breeders and dealers.
The animals are not seen as fellow creatures, but only as goods.
I very much hope that we don't have to hand the dogs over to the dealers and can put them in loving hands." In Bavaria, more than 140 illegal transports were registered in 2021, but this should only be the tip of the iceberg.
72 puppies of different breeds, including dogs that were much too young and also docked (which is forbidden in Germany), were seized.
Tessy Lödermann: “I would appeal to all future dog owners not to buy animals from the trunk or over the internet.
Because the buyers are also to blame for the criminal puppy trade and the suffering of the breeding bitches.”
