This year's Hanns-Joachim-Friedrichs-Prize for television journalism goes to SPIEGEL reporter Christoph Reuter.

"The way in which Christoph Reuter now combines print and podcasts, online videos and TV documentaries, TV interviews and appearances as a talk show guest in his work can be seen as the answer in a multimedia world of communication and is groundbreaking," said it for justification.

»In the current Ukraine reporting, Reuters contributions on all channels have become essential for Germany's image of the war.

They have a formative effect because they were extremely credible from the start.«

Reuter, born in 1968, has been reporting from the crisis regions of the Islamic world for decades, since 2011 mainly from and about Syria, but also from Iraq and Afghanistan - and most recently from Ukraine.

He studied Islamic Studies and speaks fluent Arabic.

Reuter is an award-winning reporter and has written several books, such as

  • »The Black Power« (2015) about the inner workings of the terrorist militia »Islamic State«,

  • »My life is a weapon« (2002) about suicide bombers

  • and, together with Susanne Fischer, »Café Bagdad« (2004) about everyday life in embattled Iraq.

The TV prize has been awarded since 1995 (you can find an overview of previous prize winners here ).

It is named after the former “tagesthemen” presenter Hanns Joachim Friedrich (1927 – 1995).

The jury includes well-known journalists such as Gabi Bauer, Petra Gerster, Tina Hassel, Maybrit Illner, Claus Kleber, Theo Koll, Stephan Lamby, Sandra Maischberger, Frank Plasberg, Thomas Roth, Hajo Seppelt, Marietta Slomka, Ulrich Wickert and Anne Will and Armin Wolf.

Friedrichs worked for the BBC, WDR and ZDF, among others.

He reported as a correspondent from the United States and from Saigon during the Vietnam War.

Friedrich's reputation as a journalist strengthened his work as moderator of the "daily topics" from 1985 to 1991.
