Cordiality is the be-all and end-all for Barbara Klotz: she has been working part-time as a waitress at folk festivals for half her life – because she enjoys it.

For a few days it's been going around again on the Puchheimer Volksfestplatz.

The chickens tan on the skewers, the beer flows and children do their rounds on the carousel.

A visit to the folk festival.

Puchheim – Due to the pandemic, the last two years have been anything but easy for the cultural sector and gastronomy.

This applies in particular to showmen and festival hosts.

She is all the more pleased that folk festivals are possible again this year.

And the visitors don't want to miss out on the fun either.

This afternoon, however, not too many people stroll through the Puchheim folk festival - this is probably due to the warm, humid weather.

At the bumper car

But those who are there are having fun.

Like little Felix (3), who still wants to go to the bumper car, and his sister Ronja (5), who has just been allowed to go duck fishing, which is what she likes best.

Her mother Helena from Puchheim thinks it's "nice for the children" that there's a folk festival again, because duck fishing, carousel rides and of course sweets are simply part of childhood.

Richard Schwenold, 47, from Kößlarn (Passau district) can tell you a thing or two about that.

He comes from a real family of showmen and spent his childhood at folk festivals.

"That was great," he says.

As a showman's child, he got everything for free and always had new friends.

Even if it was rather difficult at school.

The teachers were not interested in the temporary students.

"You were just squatted in the back row, and then the teachers just said succinctly: watch it," Schwenold recalls.

Luckily that's no longer the case today, he says, referring to his daughter, who is just finishing her secondary school.

FFB newsletter.)

In any case, he's happy to be able to work again.

Because the season for showmen only goes from "O to O - Easter to October".

During this time, the money for the whole year must be earned so that the traditional business can continue.

Schwenold is already running it in the 7th generation.

Originally founded as a circus, his company now not only offers duck fishing and dart throwing, but also the chain carousel at the Puchheim folk festival.

attraction

Lisa Metzger, 19, from Giebelstadt near Würzburg also had a good childhood at folk festivals.

She is employed at the "Public Festival Attraction Roth" and sits in Puchheim at the cash register for the bumper cars.

Until recently, she did it part-time during the holidays.

But since this year she has been working full-time for the Roths, who are her neighbors in Giebelstadt.

What she likes most about her work is the team spirit.

"The collegial atmosphere is nice for me and getting around," she says.

Those who find themselves in the marquee after visiting the fairground rides and booths may be lucky enough to be able to sit at one of the tables that Barbara Klotz is responsible for.

The native of Wessling (60) can look back on 30 years of professional experience.

“You experience so much.

There's nothing that doesn't exist," she says and laughs.

She is actually a real estate agent, but during the year she works as a waitress at twelve folk festivals, she says.

Because she just enjoys it.

For her, “cordiality is the be-all and end-all” and you can see that she means it.
