Allgäu - By 2033, all driving licenses in the EU should look the same.

Instead of over a hundred different formats, there will only be one: the credit card driver's license.

In Germany alone, a total of 42 million driving licenses are affected.

This is pointed out by the Auto Club Europa (ACE), district of Allgäu.

In Germany, the exchange is staggered according to vintage and date of issue.

People who were born between 1953 and 1958 and have a driver's license that was issued before January 1, 1999 must hurry up.

You only have until July 19, 2022 to exchange them - and only because this deadline has been extended in the meantime.

The exchange period depends on the date of issue and the year of birth.

If the driver's license was issued before January 1st, 1999, the year of birth of the driver's license holder determines the time of the exchange.

Anyone born between 1953 and 1958 should have had their new driver’s license by January 19, 2022.

However, due to the corona situation, the conference of transport ministers had again decided on a grace period: the fine for these age groups will remain suspended until July 19.

After that, the driver's license becomes invalid, so that a warning fine of ten euros is due in the event of a traffic check.

All other vintages have more time.

However, there is no need to wait for a deadline, the driving license can be exchanged at any time.

The driver's license is generally issued by the responsible driver's license authority or driver's license office.

Depending on where you live, this can also be the Citizens’ Registration Office.

Anyone who was born between 1953 and 1958 and has not yet exchanged should make an appointment as soon as possible.

In addition to the old driver's license, a valid identity card or passport and a biometric passport photo must be presented.

For driver's licenses issued before 1999, a so-called record card copy may also be required if you have changed your place of residence in the meantime.

This is an excerpt of the personal data from the driver's license register of the driver's license authority that originally issued the driver's license.

As a rule, the application can be submitted online and free of charge.

The issue of the new credit card driving license costs 25 euros.

If you want to have the finished EU driving license sent to you, you have to calculate additional shipping costs.

Before 2013 there were more than 110 valid driving license formats in Europe - this made it very difficult in practice for the authorities to check the validity of a foreign driving license or to detect a forgery.

With the credit card driver's license, there will only be one EU-wide driver's license format in the future.

It is therefore more forgery-proof and simplifies the work of the authorities across borders.

The EU driving license has a limited validity and must be reapplied for every 15 years.
