The Centre for Food Safety of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said today (June 30) that a locally produced prepackaged frozen smoked salmon may be contaminated with the pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, and the public is urged not to eat it. Use or sell immediately.
Sampling at online store detects Listeria
A spokesman for the Centre for Food Safety of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said that a sample of locally produced smoked salmon was taken from an online shop for testing through the routine food surveillance programme.
The results showed that Listeria monocytogenes was detected in the 25-gram sample, which exceeded the requirements of the "Guidelines for Microbiological Content in Foods".
This product is Norwegian salmon slices with smoked grass, locally produced, 100g net weight per pack, distributed by Polyfood Food Service Co. Ltd., and involves all batches with a best before date of June 25, 2022 or later .
Severe complications can occur in newborn infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems
The spokesman mentioned that most healthy people have no symptoms or only mild symptoms after infection with Listeria; however, new-born babies, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may develop serious complications such as sepsis and meningitis , and even death; Listeria infection in pregnant women can also lead to fetal miscarriage, death, premature birth, or serious infection in the newborn baby.
Authorities have requested that products be discontinued and removed from shelves and recalled
The spokesman pointed out that the CFS informed the manufacturers and instructed them to stop selling the affected products and take them off the shelves, and start recalling them; it has immediately dispatched personnel to the relevant food manufacturing plants to follow up the investigation, and instructed the plant managers to conduct cleaning and disinfection.
The Centre will continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate action.
If the trade holds the product concerned, it should stop using or selling it immediately.
The spokesman continued to appeal to members of the public to stop consuming the affected products if they bought them. The public can also call the manufacturer involved (2898 9962/6366 0067) during office hours to inquire about product recalls.
