Johannes Miggenrieder (17) from Poing won 1st place in the U23 age group at the Tour Transalp.

Between two stages, he jetted off to Markt Schwaben for his graduation party.

Poing – The distance by car between Markt Schwaben and Valle del Chiese, a town in a side valley of Lake Garda in Trentino, is 403 kilometers.

403 kilometers that Johannes and his father Hans Miggenrieder from Poing drove there and back within twelve hours.

The unusual: In between there was the graduation ceremony of the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium, the days before and the day after the Transalp mountain bike race.

This was won by 17-year-old Johannes Miggenrieder as the youngest participant in the U23 age group;

the two-man team of father and son also finished third overall.

They achieved both successes the morning after graduation.

Now, slowly: On Sunday, June 19, Hans (52) and Johannes Miggenrieder started the Tour Transalp at Lake Reschen in South Tyrol (known for the church tower that juts out of the lake) together with around 650 other participants.

It led in seven stages to Saturday, June 25, covering a total of 617.54 kilometers, with 15,000 meters of altitude difference to be overcome.

With the racing bike.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Ebersberg newsletter.

Father and son decided last year that they would take part in the tour and registered.

The race was postponed twice because of Corona, most recently to June 2022. A few weeks before the start, Johannes Miggenrieder found out that on the penultimate day of the tour, of all days, the Abitur certificates and graduation ceremony will take place at the Franz-Marc-Gymnasium in Markt Schwaben.

Johannes Miggenrieder graduated from high school there with a first-class average.

What to do?

"After consultation with the teachers and students, I decided not to come to the award ceremony, but to the celebration in the evening," says Johannes.

While the certificates were being ceremoniously handed out in the school gym at noon, he and his father rode the Passo di Croce – the 20-kilometer climb (1,700 meters in altitude) alone took an hour and a half.

“We crossed the finish line at 1:25 p.m. and were in Markt Schwaben at 6:20 p.m.,” says the 17-year-old.

Precision landing, the graduation ceremony began at 7 p.m.

Mama Dörte Miggenrieder picked up her two husbands in Valle del Chiese.

In the parking lot of the high school into the suit and off to the party.

After graduation at 3 a.m. back to Italy

After the graduation party in the gym with parents, siblings and a disco, the high school graduates continued after midnight in the Unterbräu.

"It was great, finally partying together again," enthuses Johannes Miggenrieder.

But: he had to leave the party at 3 a.m., his aunt Susanne was waiting with her brother Hans Miggenrieder at the church, ready to leave for Valle del Chiese.

The last stage of the Transalp started there at 9 a.m.

It was "only" 53 kilometers long, but with a graduation party in his legs... - Johannes Miggenrieder still made it onto the podium, and twice.

"There were so many impressions, encounters, different feelings and of course extreme physical exertion," says Johannes Miggenrieder, describing his condition a few days later.

"I'm still not done processing it all in my head," he adds with a smile.

Poing: Trained in the basement during the corona pandemic

The classic: During the corona pandemic, the 17-year-old high school graduate (who is a member of the triathlon department of SG Poing) started special bicycle training.

His father Hans has been racing for many years and has ridden the Transalp twice.

The two bicycle roller trainers have been set up in the basement, where, thanks to computer programs and beamers, they can complete races and workouts on virtual routes with cyclists from all over the world.

At some point, the two of them had the idea: Let's do a race like this for real.

Ultimately, it turned into two races: the Transalp itself and the two car trips to be on time for the graduation ceremony and the next day for the start of the last stage.

Johannes and Hans Miggenrieder managed both – with flying colours.
