The US Supreme Court has overturned the fundamental right to abortion. Joe Biden calls it "scandalous." If necessary, he wants to circumvent the rules of parliament in order to establish the right to abortion.

There is hardly an issue that divides the USA as much as the right to abortion.

The dispute between opponents and supporters has been smoldering for years.

The Supreme Court recently overturned the fundamental right to abortion.

However, the Democrats do not want to give up on the issue just yet.

US President Joe Biden wants to exceptionally bypass the rules of the US Parliament to pass a nationwide abortion law.

He has called for the suspension of an age-old rule in the Senate to legislate a nationwide right to abortion in the United States.

"We must Roe v.

enshrine Wade in law.

And we can only achieve that if Congress votes for it," said Biden at the end of the NATO summit in Madrid.

"And if the filibuster gets in the way, it should be like suffrage that we make an exception for that."

The filibuster is a more than 100-year-old regulation that states that for many bills, 60 of the 100 senators must agree to an end to the debate before there can even be a vote in the congressional chamber.

However, Biden's Democrats only have a wafer-thin majority in the Senate.

They control 50 seats, i.e. exactly half - and are therefore regularly slowed down by the filibuster.

As Roe v.

Wade (Roe v. Wade) is aware of a 1973 US Supreme Court ruling that up until recently secured abortion rights in the US.

This month, however, the now mostly conservative Supreme Court overturned the verdict, paving the way for stricter abortion laws – even outright bans.

The Democrats had already tried to ensure the right to abortion with a federal law, but had failed with this very regulation.

Biden once again criticized the court's abortion decision with harsh words.

He called his actions "scandalous" and "destabilizing."
