Senior Likud leader Yuli Edelstein announced tonight (Thursday) that he will not run for party leadership against opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu. With Edelstein's resignation, the Likud's assessment is that the primaries for party leadership will be canceled. "The Likud movement is facing a confrontation within its ranks, so I decided to withdraw my candidacy for the party leadership in the upcoming elections," Edelstein said.
Edelstein announced last October that he intends to run against Netanyahu for the Likud leadership, This is according to Likud sources, since the primaries for the Likud presidency and the Likud list are expected to take place on the same day, and a confrontation with Netanyahu could have hurt him in the contest for a place on the list.

The last time Netanyahu ran in the Likud leadership primaries, in December 2019 against Gideon Saar, he won 72.5% of the vote and the Likud estimates that this is the highest milestone that Edelstein was able to reach.
The Likud primaries, for the list and for the party leadership, are expected to take place in the last week of July or the second week of August.
The date of the primary election is expected to be finalized by the Constitution Committee next week.
Netanyahu congratulated Edelstein on his decision, saying: "I am sure that we will work together, as we have done in the past, together with all party members for the victory of the Likud and for a great victory for the State of Israel."
