Starnberg

– The long-standing city councilor and chairman of the Pro Starnberg (WPS) voter community, Prof. Günther Picker, is dead. He died on Thursday at the age of 77, as the family announced in an obituary.

Picker was born in East Friesland.

After the war the family moved to Starnberg.

Like his father, Günther Picker also pursued a legal career.

In 1971 he became legal counsel at Deutsche Spar- und Kreditbank in Munich, before moving to the Bavarian Banking Association four years later.

For 37 years he was the executive board member at the head of the association, which currently has 64 member institutes with tens of thousands of employees.

When he retired in 2011, there was talk of the “end of an era”.

In addition, Picker held other offices, including being a member of the board of the Association of Bavarian Business for some time.

He also published numerous articles and books on art and antiques law and was an honorary professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg.

For his achievements he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and the Bavarian Order of Merit.

In Starnberg, Picker made a name for himself primarily as a pugnacious town councilor and the leading head of the WPS.

The bitter opponent of the B 2 tunnel was elected to the city council for the first time in 2008 and took over the chairmanship of the group the following year.

The fact that Eva John was elected mayor in 2014 was not least due to Picker's commitment and the WPS.

In May 2020 he began his third term of office, but two and a half months later he resigned from office and from the WPS presidency for health reasons.

"Straightforward, honest about the matter, unbending" - this is how his successor on the city council, Dr.

Johannes Glogger, opposite the Starnberger Merkur the deceased.

Picker was equipped with an "almost unbelievable legal fundus" and brought a breath of fresh air to the city council at the time.

"His death is very sad for us," Glogger said on Friday.

Eva Pfister was also "deeply affected and very sad".

Picker was "more than a long-time political companion" for her, she said on request.

"He was a cosmopolitan person who stood for his convictions, honest, responsible and a good advisor." Picker made politics for the people of Starnberg with great passion and achieved a lot, she said, citing the construction of the western bypass and the renovation of the seaside resort.

"He was combative and argumentative in the matter, but above all a kind-hearted and loving person for whom his family was everything," explained Pfister.

Günther Picker is survived by his wife Birgit, to whom he was married for more than 50 years, as well as four children and eight grandchildren.

The funeral service will take place on Friday, July 8th at 11 a.m. at the forest cemetery in Starnberg.
