(S+) Motorway blockades: is climate protection becoming more and more radical?

2022-07-01T04:03:12.773Z

The mass protests for the climate fizzled out – they weren't able to move much. That is why the movement is changing towards smaller groups with radical actions. What drives you?

Wednesday morning, rush hour on the Berlin A 100, one of the busiest autobahns in Germany.

The traffic is still flowing.

Activists from the »Last Generation« group will soon be blocking the Autobahn and sticking themselves to the road with superglue.

You could also say: stick on tight again.

According to the group, Germany should not be allowed to drill for oil in the North Sea and would have to rely 100 percent on renewable energies anyway.

On the Autobahn you can see how parts of the climate protection movement are becoming more radical.

This is the only way to avert the impending catastrophe, says a "Last Generation" activist.

"I don't know what else to do."

Drivers stuck in traffic because of the blockade see things differently.

Many perceive the blockade as useless harassment.

Tenor: The goal is right, but the way is wrong.

That's why we ask in this episode of SPIEGEL Daily: Who is behind the »Last Generation«?

How far should climate protest go?

And can further radicalization be expected in the future?

»Last Generation« activist Jakob Beyer provides the answers in an interview.
