The build-up for Oktoberfest is underway as the pandemic brings us a mid-summer wave.

Will the Wiesn be canceled at short notice?

The city would be ready for that.

Munich – It is increasing and increasing: the number of new corona cases!

On Wednesday, the incidence reached a new high of 598.4.

More and more people are falling ill in the city - while in their hearts the construction of the Oktoberfest is in full swing.

In view of the current pandemic development, the question is: will people be allowed to celebrate in the marquees this year?

Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) is concerned about the Wiesn – on Monday evening, according to the Bayerischer Rundfunk, he speaks of “devastating numbers” and the hope that the topic of Oktoberfest “does not have to be discussed in the short term”.

Oktoberfest 2022: Munich takes precautions in the event of a Corona cancellation

If the worst comes to the worst, the city has taken precautions: unlike in previous years, there are not one, but two contracts with the innkeepers and breweries this year.

So far, they only have permission to set up the tent; the contract for putting it into operation will only be concluded when it is certain that the Oktoberfest can actually take place.

"We took legal advice," explains Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU).

And thus done the homework that the city council gave to the economics department: A cancellation of the Wiesn should not be at the expense of taxpayers.

The beer prize for the Oktoberfest 2022 is also causing a stir.

A scenario that seems far away for Baumgärtner anyway: "I was and am sure that we will have an Oktoberfest." Also in view of the rampant corona infections?

Baumgärtner emphasizes that he takes the numbers seriously – but you have to look at them in a differentiated way.

Host spokesman Peter Inselkammer thinks so too: Both refer to the situation in the hospitals – this is crucial.

An argument you hear a lot these days.

Current numbers worrying - will the Wiesn take place in 2022?

What do the numbers say?

For the past seven days, the State Office for Health has reported 860 new hospitalized cases in Bavaria (previous year: 43 cases).

There is an increase of 17.7 percent in the occupancy of hospital beds with corona patients (2030), and an increase of 15.7 percent in the intensive care beds currently required (147).

Exactly one year ago, the incidence reported by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for Munich on June 29 was 10.6.

That day there were 34 new cases - yesterday it was 1959.

Lauterbach has been questioning Oktoberfest since May

In view of the corona development and possible variants, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) questioned Munich's plans to allow the Oktoberfest to take place without restrictions as early as May.

for dr

Christoph Spinner, pandemic officer at the University Hospital Rechts der Isar, said the increase in numbers was "to be expected, by autumn at the latest".

According to the expert, the observation of incidences is now less important than the protection of risk groups.

"Disease prevention is of great importance."

A substantial increase in all marquees

Professor Matthias Klein, head of the central emergency room at Klinikum Großhadern, says about the current situation: "In my opinion, the high absenteeism rates among medical staff, which lead to bottlenecks in patient care, are particularly worrying." Wiesn stands for the opposite.
