If you want to buy an electric car, you prefer new cars – but potential buyers are very skeptical, especially when it comes to older electric vehicles.

Ostfildern – The number of e-cars on the streets is growing and growing.

However, there are still some caveats.

Among other things, these relate to the topic of range – although this is repeatedly misjudged even by electric car drivers.

The charging problem is still an exclusion criterion: charging stations are in short supply, especially along the freeways.

Another exciting question is how electric cars can be resold as used cars.

A survey (May 2022) now shows that many potential e-car buyers are quite skeptical about used electric vehicles.

Used e-cars that are more than a year old are hardly in demand among potential Stromer buyers.

E-cars as used vehicles: great skepticism about older electric vehicles

According to a survey by market observer DAT (Deutsche Automobil Treuhand), most of those planning to buy an electric vehicle would buy a new car (67 percent).

A used electric car that is no older than twelve months is therefore only an option for 40 percent of those surveyed.

However, only one in ten can imagine buying an electric car that is more than a year old.

E-cars as used cars: 34 percent consider the technology to be outdated

When it came to the reasons why they did not want a used e-car, 34 percent stated that this was due to the outdated technology of the electric vehicles (battery, range, charging capacity).

33 percent said the price advantage compared to a new car with government subsidies was too small.

Too long loading times were an exclusion criterion for 30 percent - and 24 percent stated that they never buy a used car.

As the DAT survey also showed, the acceptance of e-cars as the main vehicle has increased significantly compared to September 2019.

If only 39 percent of those surveyed could imagine this at the time, in May 2022 it was now 49 percent.

A quarter of the participants can only imagine an e-car as a second car - in September 2019 it was still 45 percent.
