The 49th Garchinger Bürgerwoche has opened.

"Now it's time to have fun," the mayor toasted the guests on the opening night.

Garching

– With a green apron and a thick wooden mallet, Garching's mayor Dietmar Gruchmann struck the decisive blow: the blow that was to get the first 50-liter keg of tasty Augustiner beer flowing.

He was a bit too timid, because it took three big hits, two small ones and a tiny follow-up until the tap was securely in the wooden barrel.

With the well-intentioned five shots, the first barrel was tapped and with it the 49th Garchinger Bürgerwoche.

"Now it's time to have fun," Gruchmann toasted the festival community on the opening night on Thursday, while waiter Thomas Keller did the actual "work".

Because the first guests had already gathered on the stage to get a free beer.

Probably the nicest mayor task: Dietmar Gruchmann (left) tapped the barrel and citizens' week.

"The next few days are all about fun and joy," emphasized Gruchmann.

After two years of "handbrake and being a hermit" it's finally time to meet up, chat, laugh and celebrate.

It was "time to show that we stick together and create something so great.

Our Garching Citizens' Week is an authentic and genuine folk festival!"

A look at the festival program with the top-class bands and a varied and attractive program as well as the fairground rides let Gruchmann look forward to the next four days with good cheer: Children's and senior citizens' afternoon, honors for athletes and deserving citizens, vintage car meeting, parade with 650 adults and 350 children , musically accompanied laser show and the tug-of-war competition.

And for thirst and appetite: "The beer tent opens at 11 a.m. on every festival day," says Gruchmann, and the bar closes at 12.30 a.m.

At the opening, Kathrin Frohwein and Michael Ljubisic held a prayer service in the marquee.

On Wednesday (July 6th) the Garching Symphony Orchestra will be performing, and movie buffs will get their money's worth at the open-air cinema on Thursday (July 8th).

"But that's not the end of it, because another highlight will follow, the popular street festival in downtown Garching next weekend," said Gruchmann, who welcomed a special guest: Ernst-Magnus Herdieckerhoff.

He came as a representative of the Norwegian partner community LØrenskog and had more than just a word of welcome with him.

"After 48 years of town twinning, we will finally inaugurate Garchinger Strasse here in autumn."
