Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko stressed today that Western sanctions will not be able to change the course of integration between Russia and Belarus.
"Sanctions and restrictions will not change the course of Belarus and Russia for further rapprochement, integration and the building of an effective federal state," TASS quoted Matvienko as telling reporters after the full meeting of the forum of the two countries' regions.
Matvienko added that "integration is a historical and purposeful process", pointing out that this represents not only the will of our leaders, but also the will of our peoples, who see the union state as a guarantee of security and sovereignty for both countries and a doubling of our efforts in accelerated economic and social development.
Matvienko indicated that the main objective during the process of building the state of the union and the integrative processes is to improve the quality and level of well-being of the peoples of the two countries.
Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed earlier today that Western sanctions against Russia helped accelerate economic integration between the regions of Russia and Belarus, which led to the growth of economic exchange between them, pointing out that Russia was able with Belarus to achieve an ideal level of strategic partnership and alliance.
