ANALYSIS - Yields of soft wheat should only be down slightly this year in France, despite the drought and bad weather in the spring. Cereal farmers will console themselves with high prices.

Drought, hail, frost, storms… Spring was tough for French cereal farmers, who went through a series of extreme climatic hazards when their crops were at a crucial stage in their growth.

But while the combine harvesters have been out for a few days in the south of France, the first harvest estimates are proving to be less catastrophic than expected for the 2022 harvests. A strategic harvest, in a context where the war in Ukraine and the droughts in several areas of the world are weighing on the global availability of bread wheat.

According to professionals in the sector grouped within Intercereals and the Arvalis technical institute, the yield of common wheat in France could thus reach 69.5 quintals per hectare this season.

That is a limited decline of 3% compared to the average of the last ten years, and 2% compared to the summer of 2021, which had been a decent year.
