The IWL workshops for people with disabilities celebrated the opening of an additional hygiene assembly.

Components for the dental industry are manufactured there.

Machtlfing

- More orders, more employees and more space - all this is offered by the expansion of hygienic assembly at IWL.

IWL Machtlfing has been manufacturing dental components since 2001. The reason for the conversion was an order from long-standing partner 3M.

Hygienic assembly is the largest department at IWL.

Before the conversion, 30 people were employed there.

When there was a lot of work to do, employees from other departments supported the production.

"When colleagues helped, things got tight," said operations manager Alexander Härtl.

Thanks to the conversion, the hygiene assembly now offers space for ten more workstations.

Among other things, the employees produce up to 50,000 containers for dental impression material per week by inserting the components into one another.

The latest product that 3M has ordered from IWL is an applicator for dental cement, which is used, for example, for root fillings.

Rings about five millimeters in size must be threaded on to manufacture the applicator – with a great deal of sensitivity.

The department creates around 20,000 items a week.

The new hygiene assembly has an office for specialists and a second hygiene lock.

In coordination with 3M's quality management, all processes were defined in order to comply with hygiene.

"It started with a line on the floor that separates the normal zone from the hygiene zone," said operations manager Alexander Härtl, recalling the beginnings of the department.

Today, before entering the hygiene area, hands must be disinfected and protective clothing and a hair cap must be put on in a changing room.

During the conversion, particular attention was paid to soundproofing in order to enable quiet and relaxed working.

Mayor wants “homely location”

At the inauguration, Andechs' mayor Georg Scheitz emphasized how much he cares about the IWL.

It's not just about work, it's also about fun and relaxation.

He is particularly pleased that only regional craftsmen's businesses were employed for the conversion.

The most important thing, however, is that everyone likes to come to work and that "Machtlfing is a homely location," said Scheitz.

There is a permanent team of employees in hygiene assembly.

Training is held once a year for everyone.

"This is a kind of basic instruction," explains production manager Thomas Keller.

The employees of the IWL choose their department themselves.

After several internships, in which inclinations, skills, weaknesses and strengths are observed, they decide together with the supervisors where they fit in best.

According to Keller, it is not always easy to meet individual needs.

"Some have only been doing one job for years, others like variety," he said.

But one thing is certain: machine work is particularly popular, "something happens there," said Härtl.

In the hygiene assembly there is a siliconizing machine - a much sought-after workplace.

However, working with machines requires detailed instruction.

In order not to overload the care-intensive employees, breaks are taken every two hours.

A highlight of the work at IWL is the work at the 3M site in Seefeld.

Up to five employees with disabilities drive there every day.

"It's a total highlight, they're totally independent," said Benedikt Baur, group leader of the hygiene assembly - also because the coffee tastes so good there.
