Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed that upholding sovereignty, security and national development interests is the supreme principle of China's policy toward Hong Kong, stressing the need for full and faithful implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle.
"The practice of the principle of 'one country, two systems' has achieved success in Hong Kong that is recognized by all," Xi was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying today at a gathering to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the inauguration ceremony of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's sixth term government. That last and through this achievement inaugurated a new era in its history.
Upholding national sovereignty, security and development interests is the paramount principle of this policy, Xi said, noting that on the basis of this precondition, Hong Kong and Macao will maintain their capitalist system in the long run and enjoy a high degree of autonomy.
He pointed out that Hong Kong has enjoyed a real democracy since its return to China, in line with the policy of "one country, two systems", explaining that its constitutional status helps protect the democratic rights of its residents and maintain prosperity and stability.
The Chinese president added that the next five years will be decisive for this region in opening new horizons and achieving a new start from chaos to order and greater prosperity.
He stressed that Hong Kong has made an indispensable contribution to China's long-term, stable and rapid economic development path and has become an integral part of the country's overall development while maintaining its strong advantages of being extremely free, open and in line with international rules.
