Schools in Baden-Württemberg, especially in social hotspots, should be better equipped and given more support.

Studies and trends show that a poorly equipped home puts a strain on the performance of students, said Minister of Education Theresa Schopper on Friday in Stuttgart.

Therefore, Baden-Württemberg wants to create a model based on a social index.

Stuttgart - "Our education system is not really equal," said the Green politician.

The income situation of the parents should not be the decisive factor for educational success.

Other federal states such as Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia have recently announced similar plans.

The green-black government coalition in Baden-Württemberg also promises a “social index-based distribution of resources” in the coalition agreement.

According to Schopper, the index is being developed by the Baden-Württemberg Institute for Educational Analysis based on social aspects.

He should have a tailor-made influence on which resources a school receives, for example for equipment or support.

According to the coalition agreement, the index should “if possible go into testing for the 2022/2023 school year”.

In addition, Schopper announced the “multi-professional teams” for the elementary schools that had already been promised in the coalition agreement.

They should relieve teachers and support students.

She did not provide any further information on the fields of work of the teams or the time frame.

The new black-green state government in North Rhine-Westphalia recently announced a similar index.

However, it is still unclear what exactly this “school-specific social index” will look like.
