The Northern Alliance is celebrating its 40th birthday this year.

At the party in Unterföhring it became clear: the eight mayors stand together.

County

- "Are you something like NATO?" - Listening up in the marquee.

The eight mayors are required.

Now the association with the Ukraine war is in the air.

Christoph Böck, Unterschleißheim, quickly captures the moderator's all too big comparison: "We used to be a defensive alliance, today we try to make our region more attractive." The threat was never as massive as in Ukraine, but there were some conflicts.

40 years of Northern Alliance - "Who would have thought that this alliance would last for so long?" asks host Andreas Kemmelmeyer in the Unterföhring beer tent, where the mayors celebrate the alliance in a good mood, unanimously and in traditional costume.

At the end of the 1970s, Munich was planning a waste and sewage sludge plant in Fröttmaning.

Other burdensome facilities followed: thermal power station, military training area, highways.

If the mayors hadn't forged a unique alliance in 1982, the north would have become Munich's backyard.

Eching, Garching, Hallbergmoos, Ismaning, Neufahrn, Oberschleißheim, Unterföhring and Unterschleißheim allied themselves.

"City and Free State had to learn that we are not just junior partners"

The eight municipalities consistently insisted on their planning sovereignty.

"The city of Munich and the Free State had to learn that there is a surrounding area, that we are not just junior partners, but one of the most successful regions in all of Germany," Kemmelmeyer looks back.

Common opponents just weld together, even the different party affiliations faded into the background: whether CSU, SPD or Freie Wahler hardly played a role.

"If someone raises their voice, they won't be heard that way.

If eight people raise their voices, they're louder," says Dietmar Gruchmann, Garching.

Resistance to Transrapid

The Northern Alliance resisted when one of the partners did not like the plans, for example against the Transrapid to the airport: the project was buried in 2007.

The headlines from the early days, which are displayed on a screen above the heads, testify to the cohesion: "Region must not continue to suck", "Northern Alliance wants to set positive planning", "Northern Alliance fights for new recreation area", "Northern Alliance is practicing solidarity", "Eight mayors pull together".

That still applies: When it comes to road construction and commercial settlements, the cards are played openly: "Planning is coordinated so that nobody is surprised," says Sebastian Thaler, Eching.

Today, topics such as digitization and the expansion of the cycling infrastructure connect the communities.

Anna-Laura Liebenstund has played a central role as head of the office since 2019.

Even if moderator Werkmeister, looking at the male-dominated group of mayors, nonsensically calls her "the quota woman", it is clear that she pulls the strings together and - as one of the eight emphasized - does "high-quality work" in the implementation of the projects.

With so much harmony, the moderator wants to stir up a little rivalry.

Unsuccessful.

"The exchange is incomparable and very valuable," emphasizes Markus Böck, Oberschleißheim.

Josef Niedermeier, Hallbergmoos, who has only been in office for a year, enthuses: "The way I was received by my colleagues was phenomenal."
