Australia's foreign minister, Penny Wong, said on the eve of the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to China on July 1 that Australia was deeply concerned about the continued erosion of Hong Kong's rights, freedoms and autonomy.
"Two years after the implementation of the National Security Law, Australia remains deeply concerned about the continued erosion of Hong Kong's rights, freedoms and autonomy," Huang Yingxian said in a statement on June 30, according to the Australian Foreign Office's website.
Huang Yingxian said the Hong Kong region's "national security law is widely used to arrest or pressure pro-democracy activists, opposition groups, the media, trade unions and civil society, and the electoral reforms implemented by Beijing in 2021 further erode Hong Kong's democratic governance."
