Close confidants are turning away: a Russian oligarch has sharply criticized Putin's Ukraine war - and made himself a criminal offence.

A regime change is still far away.

Moscow – The Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska has spoken out clearly against Vladimir Putin and the Ukraine war he initiated.

That in itself is remarkable, because criticism of the war of aggression from oligarch circles close to the Kremlin is rare - and can be punished extremely severely.

Nevertheless, the founder of the aluminum concern "Rusal" warns against the destruction of Ukraine and describes this as a "colossal mistake".

Russian oligarch slams Putin's Ukraine war: 'Destroying Ukraine would be a colossal mistake'

On Tuesday, June 28, 2022, the oligarch, who is considered to be a close confidant of Putin, said at a press conference in Moscow: “Is it in Russia's interest to destroy Ukraine?

Of course not, that would be a colossal mistake.” In the process, Deripaska also described Putin's military offensive as a “war” – which is strictly forbidden in Russia.

Since the law was changed in March 2022, anyone who spreads alleged “false news” about the “military operation” in Ukraine faces up to 15 years in prison.

In addition, it is forbidden to even criticize the war - Deripaska made himself punishable twice with his statements.

Ukraine war: Oligarch criticizes Putin's handling of sanctions

The oligarch also criticized the Russian response to sanctions imposed by Western states.

Leaders around the world have decided to take punitive measures against Putin and his country in order to bail out Ukraine.

On the other hand, 120 days after the start of the conflict, the Russian authorities still have not taken the necessary decisions to mitigate the consequences of these sanctions, Oligarch Deripaska criticized, according to the RBC news agency.

The punitive measures are "of course more painful" for Russia than for the West, explains the company founder, boldly contradicting the position of his President, who repeatedly assured that the sanctions could not harm Russia and would have severe consequences for the West.

Numerous oligarchs are suffering from sanctions from the West - including Oleg Deripaska

Numerous oligarchs were affected by the sanctions from the West.

Luxury yachts like the "Luna" were frozen in the port of Hamburg - an oligarch superyacht is now even going under the hammer.

Since the invasion of Russia, many oligarchs have no longer been able to fly abroad at will, and their access to their own wealth has also become more difficult in some cases.

The super-rich Mikhail Fridman even complained about his only "small" pocket money of 3,000 euros.

Oleg Deripaska is also on the EU sanctions list.

According to Forbes magazine, the oligarch will be worth $1.7 billion in 2022, up from $3.8 billion the previous year.

Nevertheless, Deripaska conceded that although the sanctions hit the Russian economy hard, Russia had adapted surprisingly well to the situation, reports the

.

The political situation in Russia is still stable - Putin will probably stay where he is for the time being

According to the RBC news agency, Deripaska also described the political situation as stable, saying that there was “no potential for regime change” in Russia.

A powerful opposition has long since “withdrawn from the life of the country” – or has been put out of action in some other way.

Russian media also reports that Putin "controls the emotions of Russians" and thus keeps them in check.

Nevertheless, exiled Russians are sure that the coup against Putin will come - unrest is already growing in the Kremlin.

And the wife of an imprisoned opposition figure is also of the opinion that the Kremlin boss "signed his own death sentence" with the war.
