Last month, an industrial accident in which a gondola fell on the mid-levels of Hong Kong Island resulted in two deaths. The public has once again paid attention to the occupational safety of workers. The Labour Rights Association, which has been fighting for protection for workers for many years, will hold an exhibition for its 40th anniversary tomorrow (2nd). A super gigantic "work disaster map" from the 1980s to the present reflects the bloody history of infrastructure development that Hong Kong workers have sacrificed for their lives. It also invites surviving workers and the families of the deceased to share their experiences. Director-General Siu Qianwen hopes that the incident will remind the public again and again. The dangers workers face behind their jobs.

"Our food, clothing, housing and transportation are all built by this group of workers. When they unfortunately sacrifice their lives, I hope there will be affirmation, respect and vigilance."

The 40th Anniversary Exhibition of Industrial Casualty Rights Association will be on public display at Kowloon Bay Zero Carbon Plaza for two consecutive days from July 2. There will be a series of exhibits at that time, including a message area for workers' mourning wishes and a memorial workshop for the public to leave messages or Hand-made mini monuments, allowing the public to pay tribute to the workers who lost their lives in industrial accidents with handwriting or heart.

In the center of the exhibition area, there will be a super-giant "Industrial Death Map", which mainly uses Google's "My Maps" function to record fatal industrial accidents from the 1980s to the present. People open any "Pushpin" link on the online map, and they will see As for the details of the accidental discoveries that year, the site used giant display boards and color lines to express the location of the accident to let the public know the scene of frequent accidents. Director-General Xiao Qianwen said that the purpose of the exhibition was to let the public understand that "the sacrifice of the workers is actually my own." Those around us, that is, our necessities, are built by this group of workers, and when they unfortunately sacrifice their lives, I hope there will be affirmation, respect and vigilance.”

Another focus of the exhibition is to invite injured workers, bereaved family members and officers to attend the "Real Library" activity, share their feelings on the spot, and interact with the audience in question-and-answer sessions.

Among them, Sister Mei, who participated in the "Mothers Group" of the Trade Union Association, was one of those who experienced the unfortunate death of her family.

She recalled that in 2000, she was living in the Mainland with her husband, who was assigned to work in a garment factory in Shenzhen, with her son and daughter. Unfortunately, her husband was crushed by a huge piece of clothing while working overtime at night, causing severe damage to his liver. It cost her 100,000 yuan. As a result, after negotiating with her co-workers, the incident took more than a month before the incident took place at Wenjindu Pass. The husband was transported by ambulance to Shatin Wells Hospital for treatment, but he died of acute liver failure more than ten days later.

Survivor: Joining the "mother group" makes me feel like I have fellow travelers

Sister Mei described that she had little awareness of pursuing compensation for work-related accidents, and her husband expressed that he did not want to pursue it, so he hurriedly received tens of thousands of yuan in pensions and accidental death insurance provided by the factory to resolve the incident.

She was just a housewife at the time, like a bolt from the blue, "There are no masters, and life is so gray that I have nothing to do, and even dreamed that my husband wanted me to accompany him. After I woke up, I went to ask the insurance agent if he had any After an insurance policy is covered, suicide will immediately be compensated, but then I seriously think about it, if I don’t save it, my son is only 4 and 3 years old, and I will take care of them, so I told myself to give up the idea.”

About 3 months after the incident, she got to know the Trade Union Association through her co-workers and began to participate in different activities, which made her slowly let go of her guard and open her heart.

"𠵱There is a 'mother group', all the bereaved family members share their experiences together. I tried to talk and shout all the way, and I talked and shouted all the way, and I felt that there were fellow travelers." She was an officer of the labor rights association at the time of the incident. Assisted her in applying for CSSA and moving upstairs in public housing. When her children were in secondary school, she began to work by herself as a security guard, a food vendor, a house mover and a cleaner. Her mother supported her family on behalf of her father, and she also participated in the work. The Kwok Association activities, such as helping the festival helpers make dumplings and oil corners, participating in the labor parade, volunteering in occupational safety activities, and even donating money to the victims, let her accumulate a sense of belonging little by little, and regard the Kwok Association as her "mother's home": " In fact, it doesn't mean that you have to seek compensation, but by telling your experience, you can slowly lower your past and encourage others to do whatever they want in the future, so you have to take courses to keep adding value, and wait until you can walk back out. sigh."

The 40th Anniversary Exhibition of the Labour Rights Association will be held for two consecutive days from July 2 at the Zero Carbon Plaza in Kowloon Bay. The public can visit for free.
