Half a century of Weilheim-Schongau district - that was celebrated on Friday.

The entire political prominence of the district had gathered at the long tables in the “Post” hall in Raisting – district councillors, mayors, federal and state parliamentarians, employees of the district office.

– The hostess, District Administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiß, was very happy.

In her greeting, she recalled the local government reform that came into force exactly 50 years ago, on July 1, 1972.

"It wasn't an everyday marriage that took place 50 years ago," she said.

But changes are part of life, said the district administrator.

And changes can also have a positive effect.

You just have to look at how the district of Weilheim-Schongau is doing today: "We have one of the lowest unemployment rates ever, and we combine great regional diversity, high economic performance and a high quality of life in our district." Political decisions, which also included the decision to reform the area 50 years ago, are largely due to the immense voluntary commitment in the region.

For two years there was a dispute about the coat of arms of the district

Sabine Kahle-Sander, Vice-President of the Government of Upper Bavaria, confirmed in her greeting that the marriage of the rural districts of Weilheim and Schongau, although at best a “marriage of convenience” at the beginning, was worth it in the end.

The initial difficulties - for almost two years there was a bitter fight over the coat of arms of the district - has been overcome and the region has developed excellently.

"They have an immense appeal in the region today," says Kahle-Sander.

This can be seen not least in the growth in the number of inhabitants: from 99,000 in 1972 to 136,000 today. "From craftsmanship to high-tech" everything is available.

And it is wonderful here, which is also due to the 57 million euros that have flowed into the district in urban development funds since the district merger.

After the ceremony, the new exhibition for the district anniversary was opened in the Radom in Raisting.

It is now open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
