Saying goodbye to your beloved cat is always difficult - whether the animal died of natural causes or had to be put down.

Many cat owners decide to give their deceased darling a worthy resting place in their own garden after death.

In principle, this is also permitted, but there are some legal regulations to be observed.

The following requirements must be met for a pet burial in the garden:

  • The property must not be near water or a nature reserve.

  • Anyone who does not own the property must ask the landlord for permission.

  • A distance of at least 2 meters to the property line must be maintained.

  • The grave should be at least 60 centimeters deep.

  • The cat should be wrapped in easily rotting material such as wool blankets, newspaper, or paper towels.

A cardboard box is also possible.

Burying a cat in your own backyard - Restrictions on final resting place

Unfortunately, there are also restrictions that cat owners have to accept when they want to bury their beloved pet.

Because under the following circumstances a burial of the pet is unfortunately not possible:

  • Unfortunately, if the cat died of an infectious disease, it cannot be buried.

  • It is forbidden to bury your pet on public land, such as a park or a wooded area.

A fine of up to 15,000 euros can be imposed for non-compliance.

  • In the federal state of Bremen, pet burials on private property are generally not permitted.

The reason: the city is too densely populated and the groundwater level is very high.

If you are unsure, you can ask the responsible municipal administration.

Cat owners who do not have their own garden, but still want to give their pet a dignified resting place, can also have their deceased velvet paw buried or cremated in a pet cemetery.
