Lack of a suitable work environment, long hours and low wages - these are some of the factors that lead art therapists to move to the private market.

In the next school year, a shortage of 260 caregivers is expected, which will mean that about 10,000 students in special education will not be able to receive care - warn the members of the Arts Therapy Association (YHT), which unites the caregivers and art therapists.

In a letter to Education Minister Yifat Shasha-Biton, Welfare Minister Meir Cohen and Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz, the union warns: "Neglecting the issue will cause many children to be left without a therapeutic response, which entails significant psychological consequences."

The main reason for the shortage is the abandonment of caregivers in the education system and the transition to the private market.

This is because of the many working hours, the lack of a suitable work environment, bureaucratic requirements, and low financial compensation.

Every year, about 600 therapists graduate through the arts, but the low wages prevent many of them from looking for work in the education system.

Increase in eligibility

Along with the shortage of caregivers, there has been a significant increase in the need for and entitlement to emotional care of students in the general education system - a need that has intensified significantly following the corona plague.

Outgoing Judge Tami Jeremiah: "We are on the verge of catastrophe. According to evidence that has come to us, employers are even turning to students for arts therapy because of the shortage, to fill the existing gap. I call on government ministers to intervene immediately, otherwise the psychological consequences It will be significant and many children will be left unanswered. "

The incoming chairwoman, Dr. Ilana Lach, calls on the Minister of Education to work to strengthen the profession in the education system and significantly improve the working conditions and employment conditions of caregivers through the arts, in order to attract young caregivers and retain the veteran caregivers in the system.

The Ministry of Education stated: "The education system is facing a continuing shortage of teaching staff and other areas of practice, including arts therapists in special education. Therefore, an inter-ministerial committee has been established to formulate a plan to address this shortage. Of the Regional Therapy Centers (MTA).

They train the school's education staffs so that they can complete the treatments they need for the students. "
