Corona numbers are rising again – but Bavaria is relaxing the mask requirement

2022-07-02T06:03:45.308Z

The seven-day incidence continues to rise, and experts assume a high number of unrecorded cases. The Association of Cities is calling on the federal government to act quickly. Bavaria, meanwhile, abolishes the FFP2 obligation on buses and trains.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the nationwide seven-day incidence on Saturday morning as 696.5.

The day before, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week was 682.7.

However, the incidence does not provide a complete picture of the infection situation.

Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI - mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done.

Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics.

In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

The health authorities in Germany recently reported 98,669 new corona infections (previous week: 89,336) and 103 deaths (previous week: 84) to the RKI within one day.

Here, too, comparisons of the data are only possible to a limited extent due to the test behavior, late registrations or transmission problems.

In general, the number of registered new infections and deaths varies significantly from weekday to weekday, since many federal states do not transmit them to the RKI, especially at weekends, and report their cases later in the week.

The RKI has counted 28,392,629 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.

City Day wants masks to be compulsory for interiors in dangerous situations

In its report presented on Friday, the commission of experts responsible for evaluating the corona measures came to the conclusion that the measures are effective, but only to a limited extent.

In view of this, the German Association of Cities has called on the traffic light coalition to act quickly.

"The traffic light must be agreed before the summer break," Managing Director Helmut Dedy told the newspapers of the Funke media group.

"It's too late to start a legislative process for a new infection protection law in the fall."

The federal government should make it possible “to wear masks indoors in dangerous situations,” Dedy demanded.

“Access regulations for 2G/3G also belong in the toolbox.

We have to be prepared if more dangerous virus variants come our way.«

Despite the increasing numbers, Bavaria is abolishing the FFP2 mask requirement on buses and trains.

Since the beginning of July, only medical masks have to be worn.

"We are thus relying more on the personal responsibility of the citizens," said Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU).

"In the hot summer months we are experiencing now and given the current pandemic conditions, we think this is proportionate."
