The evaluation of the previous corona measures is eagerly awaited.

The experts will present their results on Friday.

Update from July 1, 1:05 p.m .:

At the experts’ press conference on Friday in Berlin, the experts described their results of the evaluation of the previous corona measures.

The scientists present confirmed the previously leaked information.

The researchers made it clear that the results of their evaluation are “not a general settlement”.

Rather, the data should serve as a basis for further action in the pandemic.

"The demands on the commission and the report are high," said Helga Rübsamen-Schaeff, deputy chair of the evaluation commission.

However, the fulfillment of the work assignment was "considerably" made more difficult by "the fact that we were only asked to evaluate it two years after the start of the measures".

A central problem was that "it was not possible to establish sufficient, stringent and accompanying data collection since the beginning of the pandemic".

Evaluation of the Corona measures: Experts complain about "poor data"

“We have bad data,” complained the virologist Hendrik Streeck.

It is difficult to evaluate the individual measures separately, since different packages of measures were initiated at different times.

Streeck explained that lockdowns are only effective as long as the population accepts them and participates.

The virologist also drew attention to the fact that wearing a mask correctly is crucial.

Another controversial measure was school closures.

The President of the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), Jutta Allmendinger, has called for a legal right to social contacts for children as a lesson from the consequences of the corona pandemic.

There are certainties about psychological effects on children.

Consequently, "something like a legal right to a minimum of social contacts" is necessary, Allmendinger explained.

She also pointed out that school closures had negative effects on families as a whole - such as a "relapse into old gender roles" and an "incredible level of mental exhaustion".

Evaluation of the Corona measures: Experts present a report

First report from July 1st:

Berlin – It is summer in Germany.

The temperatures are high, the weather is mostly friendly and the corona virus is currently only playing a minor role.

However, experts and politicians never tire of expressing their concerns about a new, severe corona wave in autumn.

What measures should then be taken?

Before a decision is made on this, the traffic light coalition - primarily at the request of the FDP - has agreed to wait for the scientific evaluation of the previous corona restrictions.

A commission of experts will present the results of their evaluation on Friday (July 1st) around 12 noon.

Scientists from various disciplines belong to the Expert Committee, half of which is made up of the Federal Government and the other half of the Bundestag.

Above all, the evaluation is intended to highlight the specifications in the context of the "epidemic situation of national importance".

This situation, determined by the Bundestag according to the Infection Protection Act, existed for several months until the end of November 2021 and made possible, among other things, lockdowns, the closure of various facilities and everyday requirements - for example the 2G and 3G regulations.

The committee had already signaled that no “full evaluation of all measures” was to be carried out by the end of June.

In addition, expectations of concrete recommendations for politicians were dampened.

In the coalition, however, the FDP in particular insisted on the evaluation as a prerequisite for further steps.

A follow-up regulation must be found for autumn because the corona provisions in the Infection Protection Act, which were severely reduced in spring, expire on September 23 as the nationwide legal basis.

Dispute between the Corona experts: Stöhr's report is probably not critical enough

The expert committee on the previous corona measures should not be confused with the expert council of the federal government, which has already submitted several statements on pending decisions.

There was a fuss about the committee after virologist Christian Drosten announced his withdrawal at the end of April.

One of the reasons given was that, from his point of view, the equipment and composition of the committee were not sufficient to be able to guarantee a high-quality evaluation.

At the suggestion of the Union, virologist Klaus Stöhr replaced Drosten.

Stöhr is considered a critic of many corona measures.

Most recently, the virologist accused Health Minister Lauterbach of “scaremongering” with regard to the current summer wave.

As the

reports, there should have been a dispute in the expert committee.

The evaluation of the previous corona measures is therefore not critical enough for Stöhr.

According to the report, he wanted to tighten the rating, but encountered resistance from the other members.

The experts' paper is to be presented at a press conference on Friday at 12 noon.

As the

further reports, the lockdowns should come off badly, among other things.

They would have "a short-term positive effect", but would "be less accepted by the population in the long run and lose their effect".

In addition, there should also be criticism of the 2G and 3G regulation in the assessment.

According to Bild

, the "proven effect" appears to be "rather small"

in the experts' evaluation paper.

In addition, the political goal of getting more people to get a corona vaccination through the measure was missed.

The mask requirement is viewed differently by the experts.

As the

Süddeutsche Zeitung

reports, according to the paper, it could be “an effective tool in combating the pandemic”.

However, wearing the masks correctly is crucial.

"An ill-fitting and not tight-fitting mask has a reduced or no effect," the experts' report says.

According to the experts, it is not clear whether the corona protection of FFP2 masks is better than that of surgical masks.
