The essay 'A Room of One's Own' is the starting point for the Danish Architecture Center's exhibition 'Women in Architecture'. The exhibition reviews the careers of key architects in Danish history and hosts the installations of three modern-day architects: the Mexican Tatiana Bilbao, the Norwegian Siv Helene Stangeland and the Spanish Débora Mesa

"For centuries, women have been mirrors endowed with the magical and delicious power of reflecting the figure of a man, doubling his natural size."

These words that Virginia Woolf wrote in 1929 in

A Room of One's Own

, an essay in which she stated that women should be independent, both in a physical and metaphorical sense, in order to be able to create significant works, have inspired the

Women in Architecture exhibition

.

The exhibition at the Danish Architecture Center reviews the careers of key architects in Danish history, with names such as Karen Clemmensen, creator of iconic furniture for firms such as Fritz Hansen.

In the exhibition, the rewriting of the canon coexists with the installations that three modern-day architects have designed: the Mexican Tatiana Bilbao, the Norwegian Siv Helene Stangeland and the Spanish Débora Mesa.

The three show in

A Room

,

You and Us

,

Body & Mind Spa

and

The Room

, respectively, what it means for them to have a room of their own.

For Bilbao it is essential to have private spaces where you can rest, create or simply be alone.

“In this exhibition we have created a space that has areas for intimacy, for meeting and for any intermediate point according to the need of each one.

The intimate space is not the same for everyone, that is why in this work there are different configurations that each person can reformulate and interpret”, explains the Mexican architect by email.

For her part, Siv Helene Stangeland, from the Helen & Hard studio, explores intimacy and space for contemplation in a project that she has developed in collaboration with the artist Marina Abramović.

“The idea was to create a spa for Marina to prepare herself, both mentally and physically, for her

, a private process that you often share with friends.

The design of this place, which is inspired by

hammams

Turkish, includes a shared area with seats woven into the walls of an intricate wooden structure.

With him, above all, he sought to explore the idea of contemplation and collective meditation.

The concept of gender is approached as part of this fundamental spirit of exchange and connection across borders, which for us has a precedent”, says Stangeland.

Ensamble Studio, Débora Mesa's firm, has designed a room that reflects creative and intellectual freedom.

“The installation reimagines the room as a malleable and sensual space, dismantling preconceived ideas about what a room is.

It embodies freedoms that begin with architecture and (ideally) transfer to life.

It is designed and built by a team of people of different gender, experience and mindset.”
