The Christmas market in Starnberg will last twice as long as usual this year, namely two weekends.
The city is thus fulfilling many wishes.
Starnberg
– Two years in a row, the Starnberg Christmas market on the church square fell victim to the corona pandemic.
This year, those responsible in the town hall are planning an XXL version.
This week, the city council accepted the administration's proposal to hold the market on the first two Advent weekends this year with only one dissenting vote (Franz Heidinger, BLS) - and thus twice as long as in the past.
The plan is to open the stands on the church square from Thursday to Sunday, explained the responsible office manager Sarah Buckel.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in between there should be no market operation.
"The advantage of this variant is that the closing days can be used to change the occupancy of the stalls," she wrote in the meeting proposal for the city council.
"As a result, clubs can only take part in the market for one weekend and make the booth available to another club or dealer after the first weekend."
Sunday shopping on the 1st Advent
Numerous inner-city players wished for a further expansion of the Christmas market, explained Buckel.
Retailers and restaurateurs expect this to increase customer frequency and strengthen tourism.
According to Buckels, the city initiative also wants to flank the market with a shopping Sunday on the first Advent.
For the city, the extension means additional costs of around 15,000 euros, including for renting the huts, for event technology, electricity, water and waste as well as the security service.
In addition, there is a higher deployment of city officials.
On the other hand, additional income of around 8,000 euros can be expected from higher user fees.
The Starnberg Christmas market traditionally takes place on the second weekend in Advent.
It originally started on Friday afternoon and ended on Sunday evening.
In 2016, the opening was brought forward to Thursday evening.
At the last edition in 2019, 37 artisans, clubs and restaurants offered their goods in the shadow of the parish church of St. Maria.
This magnitude should be maintained this year, as Buckel added at the request of Starnberger Merkur.
The "very numerous" points of the supporting program are to be divided between the two weekends - the city does not fear a loss of quality as a result.
