The Chinese authorities announced today that 27 people are missing after a floating crane sank in the waters off the coast of Guangdong Province in the south of the country as a result of a strong tropical storm and strong waves.
"Storm Chaba" caused the sinking of a floating crane after it broke its mooring chain and 27 people disappeared, Xinhua quoted the provincial marine search and rescue center as saying, noting that three people were rescued while search operations were still underway.
Rescue services added: Helicopters, rescue ships and commercial ships were sent nearby to assist in the rescue operations.
Also yesterday, 20 crew members were missing from a ship after it sank off Hong Kong in the South China Sea as a result of its exposure to Storm Chapa.
