It's done: Three weeks earlier than planned, the Helios Amper Clinic Dachau was able to complete the conversion of its ward block with 380 beds on six floors.

The mammoth project lasted more than four years.

– Since February 2018, the floors have been completely gutted, from top to bottom, and then refurnished with increased comfort.

The original three-bed rooms now only have two beds, as Medical Director Professor Hjalmar Hagedorn emphasized during a tour with representatives of the clinic advisory board and supervisory board and the press.

Each patient room has its own bathroom with shower.

According to Hagedorn, all six floors have the same structure in principle: the patient rooms are grouped in an outer ring.

The manager of construction and operating technology, Andreas Zaremba, even got the help of a gallery owner to adapt the pictures on the walls to the rooms.

The ward rooms, changing rooms for the nursing staff, nursing work rooms and ward registration form the core of each floor.

“On the way to the digital hospital,” as Hagedorn put it, computer screens are dominating the wards in comparison to paper.

In times of increased hacker attacks on public facilities, there is a sophisticated anti-hacker concept, informed the medical director.

The 6th floor has been converted into a so-called optional service station.

On the 5th floor, next to the normal ward, there is a telemetry unit for cardiological patients.

In the summer of 2020 and early 2021, the renovated normal wards on the 4th and 3rd floors went into operation.

At the turn of the year 2022, the 2nd floor was finished so that the women's clinic could move back to its original place.

On the now reopened 1st floor, next to the normal ward, separated only by a glass door, is the Intermediate Care Station IMC, in German the monitoring station and the stroke unit (special ward for a stroke).

The Helios Amper-Klinikum does not provide any information on the cost of converting its ward building, even when asked.

Professor Hagedorn admitted that not all of the 380 beds that are now available can be occupied.

Because of corona quarantines, not all employees of the clinic are currently available.

In the case of corona patients, the incidence, which is currently increasing again, is not yet noticeable.

Parallel to the conversion work in the ward building, the operating wing is being expanded to include new rooms.

"Our goal is to connect three more operating theaters to the network this fall, which will bring us to twelve," reported Hagedorn.

The large, state-of-the-art operating theaters enable the nursing staff and doctors to work safely and ergonomically.

Work on the ground floor and basement will continue into the coming year.

"Then our major construction project will be complete," says Hjalmar Hagedorn.
