Thousands of Munich residents were again at the weekend in the English Garden to swim and relax.
The police are now warning visitors with posters because brazen thieves are out and about.
Their goal: cell phones and backpacks in particular, which often go unnoticed while swimming.
Munich - summer, sun, bathing fun!
Not only at Munich's lakes, but also in the English Garden, many Munich residents are currently cavorting, looking to cool off in the Eisbach and Schwabinger Bach.
But that worries the police in particular: they have been warning of brazen thieves with posters for days.
Because the situation in the English Garden could get worse...
"Stop the theft" says the large-format posters, of which police inspection 12 (Maxvorstadt) has now hung up to 30 pieces: for example in the entrance areas of the English Garden, at junctions and also at "preferred crime scenes", says police chief Christian Poganski at the request of our editors - i.e. near the bathing meadows of the Eisbach below the Monopteros.
“The thefts in the English Garden are a type of crime that we have been monitoring closely and in a targeted manner for many years,” says Poganski.
"Our approach is an increased police presence on site and a special sensitization of visitors to the English Garden." In particular through the reference to the posters.
Munich: Police warn park visitors not to leave their valuables unattended
"In order to prevent such crimes, we advise you not to leave valuables unattended," says the chief police officer.
In particular, the act depicted on the warning poster - the theft of a smartphone hidden in a backpack - is a very typical case, which often occurs in the English Garden.
"Theft offenses in the area of the English Garden have been increasing in recent years," says Poganski.
Only in 2020 did the numbers fall slightly - also because of Corona.
There are no figures for the current year 2022.
"However, there could be an increase here again," says Poganski.
To avoid this, the police are now warning with the posters.
