It is intended to revolutionize nothing less than local transport: from Monday, Peiting residents can be taken from A to B within the market town free of charge by Peitingmobile.

There is good news from Munich as far as the financing of the pilot project, which is unique in Bavaria, is concerned.

Peiting – Last Friday, the first vehicle made its rounds through Peiting, but there were no passengers on board.

It was a first test run to show whether the technology works as expected.

Officially, the starting signal will be given on Monday, but the community has not done much publicity for it.

Mayor Peter Ostenrieder, the driving force behind the project, speaks of "soft opening" and doesn't want to raise too many expectations, especially at the beginning.

“We certainly won't have thousands of passengers in the first week.” It's a leap into the unknown, which isn't unusual per se for a pilot project.

The head of the town hall knows that everything has to settle down at the beginning.

"There will be some teething problems."

Improvisation was required in advance.

Due to delivery problems, the two VW ID3 models ordered months ago have still not arrived.

So first of all you have to use a rental car, only with an electric car - the Mazda MX30 came in time - a start would not have made much sense.

Last week the rental ID3 was quickly pasted so that it can also be recognized as a Peitingmobile on its journeys through the community.

Preliminary meeting with the drivers in the town hall

Already last Monday, the municipality had ordered the future drivers of the citizens' shuttles to the town hall for a preliminary meeting.

The mayor explained in an interview with the SN that it was about legal issues, but also very practical things, such as how to deal with the subject of dogs.

"Ultimately, the decision is made by the driver." Children shouldn't be left out of the Peitingmobile either, which raised the question of child seats.

After consultation with a taxi company, all vehicles will be equipped with booster seats, the head of the town hall announced.

"But that will not be the case directly from Monday."

Finally, it was still unclear how exactly the connection between the districts of Herzogsägmühle and Birkland should work without the vehicles losing too much time commuting.

At the beginning there should therefore be two fixed times at which a Peitingmobile drives to the Diakoniedorf, namely at 9.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m.

Departure is a quarter of an hour before at the Tourist Info, which serves as a collection point for passengers who want to go to Herzogsägmühle.

"The other times are well covered by the bus lines," says Ostenrieder.

A similar solution is planned for Birkland, but this is to be discussed in detail at the local town hall meeting at the end of July.

The Peitingmobile is available on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m

Aside from these special cases, the system should function as simply as possible.

In future, the Peiting mobiles will be on the road in the village from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

If you want to book a ride, you will be connected directly to a driver via the central number 599599.

It is also possible to simply wave a free car over to you on the street.

The coming weeks and months will show whether the proposed procedure will work in practice.

The test operation is to run for two years, which is associated with not inconsiderable costs for the community.

The municipal council approved 400,000 euros last year – a proud sum that the market does not have to shoulder alone.

Half of it goes to the Free State.

Ostenrieder is pleased to say that the long-awaited funding decision has now arrived.

How things will continue after the two years now depends on whether the Peiting mobile arrives at the people of Peiting.

Revolution or non-starter?

The mayor is optimistic.

A try, he says, is always worth it.

"As a municipality, we can't rely on the district for public transport."
