Under the title “Syria Without Illiteracy,” the Ummah Women’s Foundation honored today 67 successful women in the literacy course at the Arab Cultural Center in Al-Adawi.
The honoring ceremony, which was held in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and a number of associations in Damascus, included speeches by a group of graduate women, in addition to a video presentation of the stages of their studies during the course, lyrical and artistic paragraphs, and the distribution of graduation certificates to the beneficiaries.
In a statement to SANA, the Director of the Directorate of Adult Education in the ministry, Bassam Diop, explained that the ministry, in cooperation with the local community, is conducting several courses in all governorates aimed at eliminating illiteracy in Syria, pointing out that there is a permanent free educational program that is being implemented in all cultural centers in the field of illiteracy eradication. The duration of the first course is 6 months, in addition to a second empowerment course of 3 months.
For her part, Lina Al-Rifai, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the "Women the Nation" Foundation, indicated that the honored women followed courses for a year at two levels, pointing out that the project was launched in 2018, when a course is graduated each year, and that the number of women who have benefited from training programs since the foundation's launch has reached 965 women.
In turn, Kholoud Sheikh Al-Haddadin, director of the "No Illiteracy" project at the foundation, said, "The project is based on two phases, the first is freedom from illiteracy and mastery of writing and reading well, and the second is the study of all subjects in the approved curriculum," noting that the target age groups of the project are from the age of nine. 15 to 75 years, and that the foundation's plan is to prepare the beneficiaries for the advanced stages of study.
Hadiya Ali, 58, who obtained a literacy certificate, showed that she has become more able to deal with the people around her, in addition to transportation and technological devices, while Alia Wakim saw that her learning to read and write will contribute to continuing the education of her children in the future and reflect on their educational attainment better.
It is noteworthy that the "Women the Nation" Foundation, which was established in 2018, is a non-profit developmental institution concerned with women's issues and provides a set of training, empowerment and health awareness programs for women who benefit from it.
