The first cabinet meeting chaired by Yair Lapid is being held at this time (Sunday).

This, against the background of the opening of the 25th Knesset election campaign.

"In the coming months, our goal is to run the government as if there is no election campaign," Lapid said in his opening remarks.

"Citizens are entitled to a functioning government at any given moment. The education crisis cannot wait, the Iranians, Hamas and Hezbollah are not waiting. We have to act against them in all arenas and that is exactly what we will do."

Yesterday, Lapid made a statement to the media, for the first time since taking office.

"The State of Israel is bigger than any of us, more important than any of us," he said in his opening remarks.

"It belongs not only to us, but also to those who have dreamed of it for thousands of years in the Diaspora and also to those who have not yet been born, to future generations."

He called for choosing a "common good."

"In most important issues we believe in the same things," Lapid continued, "we believe that Israel is the nation state of the Jewish people; that Israel should be a liberal democracy in which every citizen has the right to change government and determine the course of his life;

He added that "we believe that Israel is a Jewish state. Its character is Jewish, its identity is Jewish. Its attitude toward its non-Jewish citizens is also a Jewish attitude."

Lapid stressed that Israel is a peace-loving country "and reaches out to all the peoples of the Middle East, including the Palestinians, and says: 'The time has come for you to recognize that we will never move from here, so let's learn to live together.'

He mentioned the Abrahamic agreements and said, "There is a great blessing in the agreement, in the security and economic momentum created in the Negev summit with the Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt and Morocco, and there will be a great blessing in the agreements that are yet to come."

He then addressed the Iranian threat in his speech, calling on "all those who seek our evil, from Gaza to Tehran, from the shores of Lebanon to Syria - do not try us."

He mentioned the prisoners and missing persons in the Gaza Strip, Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, Abra Mengistu and Hisham a-Sayed, and said, "We will not be quiet or rested until our sons are returned."
