Locations and Armor: These are the controversies in the Likud primaries Israel today

2022-07-03T11:28:33.226Z

One of the main controversies is an initiative to change Likud regulations that stipulate that MKs who have served more than six months will not be able to run in the districts.

The Likud is preparing for the primaries, and it seems that there are currently three major disagreements that are expected to be decided this week.

The Likud Constitution Committee and the Likud Center are expected to convene and decide on these matters.

The first controversy is over the struggle of Knesset members serving in the districts and not in the national primaries.

Through the districts it is easier to get elected, due to the fact that the elections are held only by 3,500 party center members, and not by 140,000 Likud functionaries.

In light of this, there is an initiative to change the Likud regulations, which stipulate that MKs who have served for more than six months will not be able to run in the districts, but must run in the national primaries, and allow anyone who wants to run in the districts.

There is also a compromise proposal that the regulations should be changed so that MKs who have served only one year in the Knesset can run in the districts and not any former MK.

Those who oppose the change in regulations are Israel Katz and David Bitan, who want to bring in Likud activists who are identified with them into the Knesset through the districts, and do not want former MKs to run and reduce their chances of getting their people in.

There is also a second dispute over the districts.

At present, each member of the center can choose five candidates in the primaries of the districts, and there is an initiative to increase the number of choices to seven candidates.

This initiative will help Israel Katz, Haim Katz and David Bitan, all of whom have the desire to bring in more of their people.

The third controversy is over the issue of places.

Until now, the national primaries have been anchored in the 20-1 places on the Likud list for the Knesset, followed by the places reserved for districts and other armor.

In the upcoming primaries, about 30 candidates in the country are expected to run for 20 seats, so there are MKs who are afraid of their place and want to increase the representation of the seats in the country to 25, 26 at the expense of the seats of the districts.
