The Hebrew calendar, the common denominator and link between all the Jews in the world, is not taken into account in the Israeli education system • Its return is an existential need

In about two months, the school year will begin in 2003. This year is called 5733, but it will open on September 1, the "sacred."

Unlike most years, this year the month of Elul almost coincides with September, so this year the children of Israel will have time to learn about the Jewish holidays and their culture.

This is usually not the case, and the result: Israeli citizens ask puzzling questions such as when Rosh Hashanah "comes out" and when Yom Kippur "falls".

For more than 3,500 years, these dates have been celebrated on Sunday and Tuesday in Tishrei, since the days when no one dreamed of the Christian calendar.

They do not "come out" and do not "fall."

What is simpler than determining that each school year will open on the first of Elul, and so there will always be a month until Rosh Hashanah.

Thus there will be regular studies for a month, and not the continuation of the nullification of the great freedom until "after the holidays."

Of course, students, teachers and teachers will soon stand up, and demand the insult of the great freedom, for fear that it will be cut short.

Even without reaching the necessary decision that this freedom is too long and too wasteful, it is no problem to decide that this freedom will take place in the months of Tammuz-Av instead of July-August.

The July-August heat is the same as the Tammuz-Av heat.

It is not difficult for the school year to begin on Sunday in Elul and end in Sivan, instead of from September 1 to the end of June.

The holidays of Israel and their customs are related to the Hebrew calendar and the seasons in the Land of Israel.

Those who wish a happy new year on holidays refer to the new Hebrew year, to the one that begins on Sunday in Tishrei and not to the one that begins on a random date in September / October.

The calendar is cyclical in nature, and cannot refer each year to different dates for the same dates and events.

But it can not be given meaning in the eyes of children and adults, when alienated from our board.

I talked to a fourth-grade student, born in February, born in Purim.

She did not know the Hebrew date of her birthday and that it falls in the month of Adar;

She did not even know what a maple was, and in any case not what the other months in the Jewish calendar were.

In this reality, the danger of assimilation threatens not only in the Diaspora but also in the Land of Israel.

The pioneers of Zionist settlement did well when they renewed the customs of the Jewish holidays and established their connection to the seasons and agricultural activities: the Feast of the Harvest, the Feast of the Firstfruits, the Feast of the Harvest, Tu B'Shvat. Christian date).

In these days of despair and loss of way, it is important to return to the roots and restore hope and Zionism to our districts.

It is an existential need regardless of being a right-wing or left-wing citizen in his political views, religious or secular in his customs and lifestyles.

The Hebrew calendar is also the common denominator and link between all the Jews in the world, who will soon begin their new year.
