Around 200 people from the village have invested thousands of hours to maintain Ohlstadt's legacy of whetstone makers.
The result was inaugurated on Sunday and triggered enthusiasm.
Ohlstadt
- He points to the coat of arms of Ohlstadt: blue background, yellow horse, white mill wheel.
Future generations should also be able to understand why the latter is depicted, emphasizes Franz Gaisreiter from the Schleifmühle Ohlstadt interest group.
Together with dozens of helpers, he made sure that the village got a grinding mill again, built according to historical models.
On Sunday, this was inaugurated with a service, speeches, demonstrations and a cozy get-together with brass band music.
In the middle of the 18th century, Ohlstadt still had around 20 grinding mills, plus a few quarries.
In 1953 it became quiet in the last mill.
Now, "after almost 70 years", said Pastor Simon Tyrolt, a mill wheel could turn again.
The grinding mill, built according to historical models, brings "a piece of local history back to life".
During a service, the priest blessed the mill, the crucifix attached there and a carved wooden statue of Saint Stephen.
Almost four years of construction for the grinding mill - now the work is done
Next to the blessed statue, on the microphone, Gaisreiter then counted numbers about the project in front of well-occupied beer benches, some of them under the shadow of a huge parachute.
Almost four years of construction, everything started in spring 2018. "Corona threw us off the track a bit," said Gaisreiter.
123 helpers were involved in the construction: bricklayers, carpenters, mechanics, to name just a few groups.
3,486 hours of voluntary work were accumulated, meetings and the like not taken into account, so that Gaisreiter would go up to around 4,000 hours.
He said nothing about the costs, but Gaisreiter revealed off the microphone that the construction sum can be estimated at 200,000 to 250,000 euros purely mathematically.
Walls, roof truss, technology, museum equipment, outdoor facilities with a stream and trees.
A grant from LEADER beckons,
up to 75,000 euros.
It was not without reason that Martin Kriner, LAG manager of the LEADER Zugspitz region, was present.
He spoke of an "absolutely unique implementation" and of the fact that with this project the whetstone workshop "should remain unforgotten", this belongs to Ohlstadt "like bobsleigh rides".
"What a day, what a project," said Mayor Christian Scheuerer.
When Gaisreiter came to his office with the idea, he still thought: "Is he crazy?"
"An incredible community effort", thanks to which "we have a center in the village again".

Visitors go into raptures: "overwhelming" and "unique"
The visitors also raved about this joint effort.
"Overwhelming," said Armin Krattenmacher as he stood inside the grinding mill.
"It's gigantic what you can achieve together - unique".
Hannelore Wullinger was standing at a table with information about the set-up.
"I think it's great," she said, looking at the building.
You can feel the cohesion of the community, at the same time the past is brought back into consciousness.
"A masterpiece," said Joachim Glaßner when he studied the information boards at the entrance to the grinding mill and praised the precise execution with simple materials.
When he then went inside, the statue of Saint Stephen was already in a niche behind glass.
Grinding mill in Ohlstadt: Technology was the biggest hurdle
The technology, said Gaisreiter, was the biggest hurdle.
For example, you had to make the spur gear yourself, the template came from a 3D printer.
Everything went well – the mill was put into operation yesterday.
All the wheels and cogs turned, the water splashed outside.
The water wheel should turn again and again in the future, for illustrative purposes - and against oblivion.
