Uzbek President Shavkat Mirzoyev declared a month-long state of emergency in Karakalpakstan, following riots in the region over constitutional amendments.
"According to a presidential decree, in order to ensure the safety of citizens, protect their rights and freedoms and restore law and order on the territory of Karakalpakstan, a state of emergency has been imposed during the period from June 3 to August 2,," the press office of the Presidency of Uzbekistan said in a statement today.
For its part, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan announced in a statement: "Public order has returned after the intervention of the security forces and the dispersal of the illegal demonstration that took place in the capital of Karakalpakstan."
The ministry added: A group of riot organizers who tried to seize the authorities of the region were arrested in order to disperse society and destabilize the social and political situation in Uzbekistan, stressing that external forces are trying to influence the situation in the region.
