The party had only just begun when shots were fired.
This amateur video footage shows crowds at a National Day parade in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago, just before a killing spree begins.
Several people were killed and dozens injured.
Alexander, eyewitness: “I thought it was the Navy saluting the flag. But then I saw people running away. I picked up my son and ran away too. When the shots started again, I hid my son in my dumpster.”
Amarani Garcia, Eyewitness: »All I remember is smoke on the ground. We were close when it happened. I heard gunshots as the guns reloaded. People screamed and ran away. It was just traumatizing and scary.«
The police are said not to have caught the shooter.
The tragic event ranks among the most recent massacres in the United States: one in Uvalde, Texas that killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school and another at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York that killed 10 people came.
