After being sentenced to 30 years in prison following his conviction for sexual exploitation and trafficking in women and minors over the years, singer R. Kelly has been placed on a suicide watch and is now suing the detention facility in the millions.
Kelly, 55, was convicted in September 2021 of sexually abusing minors and trafficking in women, and in addition to the heavy prison sentence, was ordered to pay $ 100,000 in compensation.
Following the sentencing, Kelly was placed on a suicide watch at the Brooklyn detention facility where he is being held, an act that his attorney said was done for punitive purposes only and only because he was a well-known celebrity.
So Kelly decided to file a lawsuit that reportedly stands at $ 100 million.
"Mr. Kelly has been placed on a suicide shift for punitive reasons only in violation of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution," his attorney argued.
"It is a policy to put celebrities on suicide watch in difficult conditions whether they have suicidal tendencies or not, just because they are famous," she continued, claiming that the place was run like a gulag (a reference to the Soviet concentration camps. A.H.). "My client has no suicidal tendencies," she said. She added that incarceration in the conditions in which he was placed caused him significant stress and distress, adding that inmates on suicide watch are monitored 24 hours a day in complete isolation, denied access to books, newspapers and utensils, and denied the right to shower or shave and are forced to wear uniforms. Reminiscent of the blankets in which furniture is wrapped during apartment moves.
The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office in response submitted documents to the court alleging that the singer was being held on a suicide shift for his own safety and after undergoing a psychological assessment.
"Kelly's current life circumstances are undoubtedly causing emotional distress," the documents submitted read.
"He is a convicted sex offender who was sentenced to spend the next three decades in prison."
