BMW M240i, a taste of M2

2022-07-04T13:40:50.577Z

TEST - Model apart in the range of the Bavarian firm and without equivalent on the market, this compact coupé revives the memory of the 2002 Turbo.

Since the European Parliament voted to ban the sale of thermal cars from 2035, enthusiasts of models with a sporty temperament - there are still many of them - have not yet given up on affording themselves, perhaps for the last time, the backfiring object of a species soon to be doomed.

Some of these vehicles are already on their way to becoming collectors' items.

Among the models identified, the BMW M240i has an enviable position.

The formula combining a compact coupé silhouette with a 3-litre inline 6-cylinder has no equivalent on the market.

Unlike other versions of the 2 Series coupé and its big sister, the next M2, which remains faithful to rear-wheel drive, the M Performance coupé entrusts the 374 horsepower and 500 Nm of its in-line 6 to an all-wheel drive equipped with a controlled rear differential.

Result: with 100% of the torque that can be sent to the outer wheel, the propulsion character is preserved.

As for the Sport Plus mode deactivating most of the aids, it is aimed at the most seasoned.

No need for this extreme to appreciate the big heart of this coupe.

Capable of vigorous acceleration (0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds) and consistent pick-ups, the M240i is a troublemaker in a hypernormed market.

The melodious mechanism alone represents a monument.

We gladly add a loving line with its dynamic profile combining a long bonnet and swollen fenders to accommodate widened tracks.

Inside, there are hardly any surprises: apart from the M decorations available as an option, the atmosphere is borrowed from the 4 Series with the digital instrumentation and the infotainment touch screen enthroned in the center.

A real behemoth of enthusiasts.
