The refectory renovation project has aroused the concern of the educational community, to the point of triggering a right of withdrawal.

“We are present this morning to reassure and reassure the parents.

This elected representative of the town hall of Bonneuil-sur-Marne is very surrounded this Monday morning in front of the Romain-Rolland school group.

A dozen representatives of the municipality are present to contact potentially worried parents.

Since last week, the work that must be carried out all summer in the refectory, with a view to creating two lines of self-service, has been causing trouble among the educational team and the management.

The presence of asbestos in certain elements of this part of the school is probably not for nothing.

At the end of the week, the academic health, safety and working conditions committee (CHSCT) was called upon.

The right of withdrawal was also exercised individually by certain teachers.

Bonneuil-sur-Marne, Monday July 4, 2022. Members of the municipality came to reassure the parents of students.

Work on the refectory of the Romain-Rolland school group was stopped until Thursday inclusive.

"We can't do class in these conditions", confided to us this Friday one of these people, evoking significant noise pollution - due to the use of jackhammers - but also clouds of dust.

In reaction and as a precautionary measure, students were "put to safety" on Friday in the schoolyard and in the nearby gymnasium.

“Not specific to teaching conditions”

"I don't understand why the work started before the start of the holidays," breathes a member of the FSU union, fearing that the children will be exposed to potentially dangerous materials.

"The site is not waterproof and you just have to breathe in asbestos dust to get sick years later," she continues.

"We have here up to 400 students and 80 adults and we do not work in conditions specific to teaching", we regret on the side of the management, during a tense exchange with certain representatives of the town hall. this Monday morning.

On the schedule for this first phase of renovation of the school group, which will have three over three summers, the town hall of Bonneuil explains that it has been known "for months".

If, faced with the beginning of a controversy, she decided to stop the site until next Thursday, she denies having wanted to hide the presence of asbestos.

The areas affected by asbestos under construction in August

"As with any old building to be renovated, the presence of asbestos was sought and established in a diagnostic report, well in advance of the construction site", is it indicated in a press release following a letter from Mayor Denis Oztorun ( PCF), broadcast from Saturday morning in parents' mailboxes.

"Several meetings were held where explanations, documents and technical diagnoses were provided to representatives of National Education and the CHSCT", it is specified in this press release.

Bonneuil-sur-Marne, Monday July 4, 2022. Two self-service lines will be created within the Romain Rolland school group to improve the reception of schoolchildren at lunchtime.

According to this document, if there is asbestos, the students are not in danger: "It was planned that the areas concerned (

Editor's note: by the presence of asbestos

) be the subject of work in the absence of any human presence, in August", explains the town hall.

“All the necessary precautions have been taken”, underlines Virginie Douet (PCF).

According to the first deputy mayor, in charge of early childhood, since June 20 the students have had lunch at the Louise-Voëlckel space, very close to the school group.

But these are not about to take advantage of the future self.

These last two weeks of June were apparently necessary to finish the site on time.

The Romain-Rolland gymnasium will be used at lunchtime “at least the first three weeks of September, announces Virginie Douet.

It was precisely to avoid this that the choice was made to start construction at the end of June.
