The US National Hurricane Center said: Tropical Storm Bonnie yesterday turned into a Category 1 hurricane off the southwest coast of Mexico with winds of 130 km.
Reuters quoted the Mexican Meteorological Authority as saying: The hurricane could lead to heavy rain, mudslides, floods, strong winds and waves up to five meters high along the southern Pacific coast of the country.
The agency added: The hurricane may reach the classification of the second category tonight, with winds of up to 177 kilometers per hour, and causing water waves to rise to life-threatening levels.
In turn, the authorities in El Salvador announced the death of one person due to the heavy rains, in addition to the suspension of schools throughout the country today.
Bonnie, the third hurricane of the Northeast Pacific hurricane season, made landfall as a tropical storm on the Caribbean coast near the Nicaragua and Costa Rica borders on Friday evening, bringing torrential rains across the region before crossing into the Pacific yesterday.
