CSU boss Markus Söder has accused the federal government of a wrong strategy in dealing with Russia and its gas supplies.

There is a risk that Germany will be decoupled from Russian gas supplies "step by step", said Söder after a joint presidium meeting of the CSU and the Bavarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

"There is a threat of an ice-cold winter," warned Söder.

According to Söder, the replacement is coming too slowly

The CSU leader also accused the federal government of being slow in trying to find a replacement for Russian gas.

"Other countries are faster," said Söder.

Italy has already signed agreements with Qatar.

The Bavarian Prime Minister also reiterated his demand to extend the lifespan of nuclear power plants and to promote water energy, which is important in Bavaria among the renewable energies.

Söder accused the Greens of wanting to get out of nuclear power for purely ideological reasons.

A few days ago, the President of the Federal Network Agency, Klaus Müller, warned of a total failure of Russian gas supplies and appealed to the population to save energy.

If the gas flow from Russia "is motivated to be lowered for a longer period of time, we have to talk more seriously about savings," he told the Funke media group's newspapers.

The weeks leading up to the start of the heating season must be used to make preparations, he said.
