Rescuers in the Dolomites search a large area for victims of the glacier collapse that led to the deaths of six people • The country believes that global warming is the cause of the unexpected disaster

Rescuers in Italy today (Monday) resumed searches for 17 people still missing in the glacier crash disaster in the Alps, in which six people were killed and eight injured.

The landslide occurred at the summit of Marmolada, which rises to a height of 3,000 meters and is the highest peak in the Dolomites in northern Italy in the Trento and Veneto region.

Experts in the country believe that the disaster, which began with the disengagement of a glacier at the summit, was caused as a result of unconventional temperatures stemming from global warming.

The whole of Italy recorded an extreme heat wave this week during which temperatures rose very rapidly.

"During the week the temperatures in the peaks of the Alps were significantly higher than the values appropriate for the season. Last winter, relatively little snow fell on the peaks, harming the natural protection of glaciers and making them more fragile," said Renato Clucci of the Italian Research Institute's Polar Research Institute.

Four of those killed in the disaster have already been identified by rescue forces, including three Italians, including two tour guides, and one Czech citizen.
