The Missing Migrants Project of the International Organization for Migration confirmed that migration across the Mediterranean is the most dangerous migration route in the world.
CNN quoted the Missing Migrants Project as saying, "The number of migrant deaths has risen to more than 49,000 people since 2014," according to the project's records.
The project stated: "Migration across the Mediterranean is one of the most dangerous migration routes, as at least 20,000 people have died since 2014 while trying to cross the Mediterranean."
According to the organization's data, the most common cause of death for migrants is drowning, with more than 20,000 drowning deaths recorded.
Africa is considered the second region with the highest number of immigrant deaths, with at least 11,000 deaths, followed by North America and South America with 6,483 and Asia with 4,867.
The Missing Migrants Project since 2014 records people who die while seeking to migrate abroad. It includes deaths of migrants who die in transport accidents, shipwrecks, violent attacks, or medical complications during their journeys. It also includes the number of bodies found at border crossings classified as corpses of immigrants.
