Media outlets in the United States are reporting tonight (Monday) a mass shooting that took place in a procession commemorating the American Independence Day celebrations on July 4 in Highland Park, a suburb of the city of Chicago.
Local authorities said they currently know of five people killed in the shooting, and that another 16 people have been evacuated to local hospitals.
"People were screaming and running away, there was complete chaos," an eyewitness said.
The gala procession began at 10 a.m., United States time, and shooting there reportedly began just 10 minutes later.
One eyewitness told local media that he noticed a shooter opening fire at the crowd from the roof of a store, and that he heard between 20 and 25 gunshots.
Documents circulated on social media show both the procession participants and the crowd watching from the side suddenly running in panic following the sounds of gunfire.
Pictures from the area showed baby strollers and abandoned mobile chairs.
