The garden railway of the Dörner family in Hohenfurch is not only worth a visit as a spectator for train fans: a selection of more than 100 locomotives and 400 wagons chug through the garden when the weather is nice.

Hohenfurch - In any case, one can speak of a small attraction that is set up in the garden of a couple from Hohenfurch.

Dozens of cyclists on the Romantic Road or Via Claudia stop here to peer curiously over the garden fence.

Far more than 1000 visitors have already immortalized themselves in the guest book.

A garden railway system of unusual proportions has been set up here: the miniature world of railway fan Karlheinz Dörner is a good 14 meters long and eight meters wide.

He has a good 100 locomotives and 400 wagons in his collection.

Not to forget his wife Roswitha, who is not only responsible for the design of the complex and the many figures, but also lovingly tends the flowers in the garden with her green thumb.

Unfortunately, last Tuesday's hailstorm caused some damage that has long been repaired.

A look back: It is a Christmas with unforeseen consequences.

Back in December 1960 in Meissen.

Little Karlheinz, just five years old, is given an electric train.

A train from the company "Piko", which made the hearts of boys beat faster in the GDR.

Karlheinz puts the rails together to form a circle and lets the locomotive drive the two wagons.

round after round.

As he remembers, a battery for the power connection was built into the transformer.

The result: nothing was working as early as the night of Christmas Eve.

Battery dead, spare battery too.

All shops closed over Christmas.

big disappointment.

The gift, however, has a groundbreaking effect on Karlheinz's further life.

After finishing school, the railway fan studied track construction in Dresden.

After that, he starts working as a "Reichsbahn Technologist" at the railway maintenance department in Thuringia.

In 2000 he was transferred to Murnau.

There he discovered his fascination for large railways, which can really be set up in the garden with all the trimmings.

Wife is enthusiastic about setting up the houses, buildings and everyday scenes next to the rails

With his wife Roswitha he has the ideal partner at his side.

She is enthusiastic about the construction of the houses, buildings and everyday scenes next to the rails.

She is the designer on the big plate.

In recent years, the hustle and bustle in the garden has moved up one floor.

Karlheinz and Roswitha moved to Hohenfurch to enjoy retirement here.

The couple laid the large system on stable slabs, which in turn are mounted on posts.

The division in the garden of the two is clearly divided: Karlheinz is responsible for the trains and track construction, Roswitha for houses, vehicles and figures.

In plain language, this means that Roswitha is the mayor of the community "Neu-Hohenfurch" with a good 150 houses.

Not to mention the residents.

They go to work in the engine shed, which evokes memories of the one in Schongau, in the railway depot, the gravel works or in the large refinery.

The wagons can be loaded or unloaded anywhere.

It goes without saying that there is also a town hall, lots of pubs and a church.

Roswitha even thought of a bathing establishment with a nudist area.

And as I said: Hohenfurch has its own train station again.

What is special, however, is the hospitality of Roswitha and Karlheinz: None of the visitors cycling past have to dislocate their necks on the fence.

Children in particular enjoy watching the train traffic very close to the rail system.

It's really hard to keep going.

Visitors are always welcome.

The facility cannot be overlooked in Hohenfurch in the garden at the intersection of Kinsauer Strasse and Lechstrasse.
