July this year is not only a big day for this year's DSE candidates, but also an important milestone for PolyU - PolyU's Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles will be renamed the Faculty of Science from 1 July 2022; The Department of Fashion has also been upgraded to the Faculty of Fashion and Textiles, adding a touch of pride to PolyU's 85th anniversary celebration.

The Faculty of Science now consists of three departments, including the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, the Department of Applied Mathematics and the Department of Applied Physics.

Professor Huang Weiyang, Dean of the Faculty of Science, believes that the repositioning of the Faculty of Science will not only allow the Faculty to continue to grow and shape its international reputation, but will also bring the development of the Faculty to a higher level: "The Faculty of Science has created PolyU Science Creates Impact It is our vision to promote the whole-person development of students so that they can realize their unlimited potential. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the school transforms outstanding research and academic achievements into impactful inventions that continue to bring positive impact to the world.”

Under the new model of "department-based" combined courses, students of the Faculty of Science can learn more about the knowledge of various subjects, keep up with the pace of the times, and show their diverse strengths in many aspects when they enter the workplace in the future.

When enrolling, students need to choose a combination course of a department; after admission, they only need to take the common core courses of the relevant department in the first academic year, and only take the major subjects in the second year, so that students have enough time to truly understand their own interests and aspirations, so as to make an appropriate choice of majors.

Theory and practice and regain international professional qualifications and certifications

The three departments under the Faculty of Science emphasize both theory and practice. The curriculum design covers the scope of Hong Kong Professional Qualification Assessment and international professional accreditation.

• Combined BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology, Food Safety and Chemical Technology (JS3010)

Graduates majoring in Applied Biology and Biotechnology can apply for membership of the Royal Society of Biology, while graduates majoring in Chemical Technology can apply for membership in the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Hong Kong Chemical Society.

The food technology and food safety course has been accredited by the Institute of Food Technology (IFT) and the International Union of Food Technology (IUFoST) food science course standards; graduates with three years of work experience in the field of food technology or food safety can apply for IFT registration Food Scientist Qualification.

In addition, students can obtain the "Intermediate Certificate in Hazard Analysis Focused Control" after completing the compulsory subject "Food Sanitation and Safety Management".

• Combined BSc (Hons) Data Science (JS3020)

Graduates of the Department of Applied Mathematics can apply for exemption from the assessment requirements of some professional qualifications, such as the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute, the Hong Kong Statistical Society, the Royal Statistical Society, etc., which will help to obtain relevant professional certification faster, and develop more in the investment or financial industry. Advantage.

• BSc (Hons) in Physics Associate Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA) / Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE) (JS3030)

The Department of Applied Physics' interdisciplinary curriculum actively develops "soft skills" such as multiple thinking and critical thinking, with an emphasis on practical application.

The department has a well-equipped laboratory and an AI laboratory tailored for the course to provide students with an excellent learning experience.

Online Briefing Session on Combined Programmes of the Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science will hold an online briefing session on the Departmental Combination Programme on 7 July 2022 to introduce the programme information provided by the Faculty under the new arrangement, the more flexible major courses, the content of minor majors and the admission interview tips.

The briefing session cordially invites principals, tutors, teachers, students and parents of all secondary schools to attend.

Keeping graduates competitive in line with global trends

"In just a few decades, our world has developed from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0; from VR to virtual world, innovation and technology have naturally become the new economic power of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. In addition to teaching students various professional knowledge, the college also shoulders the responsibility of Take the responsibility of leading them to master the skills needed in today’s society, inspire students’ entrepreneurial spirit, and make the most of their diverse strengths.” Dean Huang explained that under the new model of the department’s combined courses, students can choose “artificial intelligence” The two new elements of "Innovation and Entrepreneurship" (AIDA) and "Innovation and Entrepreneurship" (IE) are minors.

The former includes related subjects such as artificial intelligence and programming; the latter includes 12-week corporate internships and inspections of the entrepreneurial ecology of the Greater Bay Area, in order to meet global development trends and enable students to remain competitive in the international market.

Set up entrance scholarships and internship funding programs and establish communication networks with more than 40 well-known universities

In addition to the admission scholarship awarded by PolyU based on the admission results, the Faculty of Science also has additional scholarships, which are awarded up to HK$35,000 to first-year students who have been admitted to the Faculty of Science through JUPAS with outstanding academic performance.

The Faculty of Science has established an exchange network with more than 40 well-known universities around the world to increase and broaden the international experience of students.

Among them are many leading universities, such as Peking University, Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, McGrill University and University of California, Berkeley, etc.

In addition, in order to encourage students to actively participate in internships, the Faculty has an Internship Funding Scheme to provide financial assistance to students who have successfully completed their internships locally and overseas.

Dean Huang said, "We expect students who participate in the internship to not only accumulate workplace experience, but also apply what they have learned to contribute to the society." The college will also provide students with vocational training workshops before the internship to prepare students for new challenges in the future.

The scientific research results of the college respond to world issues

Adhering to PolyU's motto of "Opening things up, making things happen, learning and benefiting the people", the Faculty is committed to pursuing excellence in scientific research and promoting research that has an impact on the world.

"The Faculty of Science has seven research directions, namely Biotechnology, Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development, Food Safety and Technology, Applied Mathematics, Optimization and Operations Research, Materials Science, and Nanomaterials. Issues such as COVID-19, public health, and cancer treatment,” shared Dean Huang.

• Dr. He Daihai from the Department of Applied Mathematics assists in formulating public health measures to control infectious diseases with mathematical models of infectious diseases

The analysis of data collected during the COVID-19 pandemic has provided a significant reference for the formulation of public health measures such as social distancing and hospital bed supply.

• Prof. Yan Feng from the Department of Applied Physics successfully developed an ultra-sensitive portable novel coronavirus antibody detector

This portable tester is highly sensitive and requires only saliva to perform the test without blood draw.

The testing process takes less than six minutes, and the cost per test is only about HK$10.

• Prof. Leung Runsong and Dr. Lo Wai-hung from the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology developed a new anti-cancer drug, Pegtomarginase

Pegtomarginase has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Investigational New Drug (IND) application in 2019, and has now started its first phase clinical trial in the United States.

The Faculty has specially produced the "Research Impact" video series, introducing eight scientific research achievements that address social and environmental challenges.
